Tracer wire can be supplied as a manufacturing component for HDPE conduit, innerduct, microduct and certain polyethylene utility pipe products, rather than only as a separate wire installed in the field.
For manufacturers, the purchasing requirements can be very different from standard contractor reels. The wire may need a specific conductor, AWG and insulation construction, together with much longer continuous reel lengths for extrusion or other production processes.
AITE Cable supports customized tracer wire for these manufacturing applications, including 14 AWG, 16 AWG, 18 AWG, 20 AWG and 24 AWG requirements. Wire construction, finished dimensions, reel length and packing can be reviewed according to the finished product and production requirement.
Tracer wire purchased by a conduit or pipe manufacturer is not always the same product format used by an installation contractor.
Field-installation customers commonly use standard reels. A manufacturing line may instead need long continuous lengths so the wire can feed through extrusion or another continuous production process with fewer reel changes.
The tracer wire therefore needs to be matched to the manufacturer's finished product and production process, rather than selected only from a standard field-installation specification.
The way tracer wire is integrated depends on the finished product. It may be embedded in a conduit construction, incorporated into a duct assembly, factory-attached to a pipe or added as a conductive component in another underground locating product.
HDPE conduit and innerduct manufacturers can incorporate tracer wire into the conduit construction so the finished duct provides a conductive locating path after burial. In this type of production, wire diameter, insulation and continuous reel length may need to match the extrusion process.
Microduct and duct-bundle products can also use tracer wire as part of the finished assembly. Smaller wire gauges and long continuous reels are common considerations where the wire needs to run continuously with the duct production process.
Certain polyethylene utility pipe products use factory-installed tracer wire to provide a locating path after installation. Applications can include potable-water service tubing, reclaimed-water products, irrigation and other underground PE pipe systems.
Tracer wire can also be incorporated into detectable warning tape and related underground marking products. These applications likewise require the wire as a continuous manufacturing component rather than only as a conventional field reel.
You do not need a complete tracer wire specification before contacting AITE. To start the discussion, four basic items are usually enough.

There is no single tracer wire specification for every conduit or pipe manufacturing application. The correct construction depends on the finished product and how the wire is used during production.
AITE can review 14 AWG, 16 AWG, 18 AWG, 20 AWG and 24 AWG requirements. Our core tracer wire range uses solid copper-clad steel (CCS), while copper tracer wire constructions can also be reviewed for specific manufacturing requirements.
Insulation material, color, finished wire OD and other construction details can be customized after the basic application and wire requirement are confirmed.
Long continuous reels are one of the main differences between tracer wire supplied to manufacturers and standard field-installation products.
Fewer reel changes can help reduce interruptions during conduit extrusion, pipe manufacturing and other continuous production processes.
AITE has handled continuous tracer wire reel requirements in the approximately 10 km to 30 km range. The practical reel length depends on wire construction, finished dimensions and reel configuration, and other continuous-length requirements can also be reviewed.
Reel dimensions and packing can be discussed after the basic wire requirement is confirmed and matched to the manufacturer's production and handling needs.
